The foundation of any shear wall must be designed properly because the stability and performance of a shear wall depend heavily on its footing. This Excel sheet helps engineers carry out the footing design of shear walls based on ACI 318-99, offering an efficient and accurate method for calculating footing size, bearing pressure, bending moment, shear capacity, and reinforcement to meet safety and code requirements.

Why Shear Wall Footing Design Is Critical

Shear walls transfer large lateral forces — from wind and seismic events — down to the foundation. Unlike gravity column footings that carry primarily axial loads, shear wall footings experience significant overturning moments and horizontal base shear in addition to vertical gravity loads. This combined loading makes the footing design more demanding and requires careful attention to:

  • Net bearing pressure distribution — eccentric loading from overturning moment causes non-uniform (trapezoidal) bearing pressure under the footing
  • Uplift check — ensuring the footing does not lift on the tension side under seismic load combinations
  • Sliding resistance — the base friction and passive soil pressure must resist horizontal base shear

ACI 318-99 Design Approach

ACI 318-99 uses the USD (Ultimate Strength Design) method for footing design. Key provisions include:

  • Factored loads per ACI load combinations (1.4D + 1.7L for gravity; combined with lateral)
  • One-way (beam) shear check at a distance d from the face of the wall
  • Two-way (punching) shear check (relevant at column footings but also checked here)
  • Flexural design at the critical section (face of the wall)
  • Minimum reinforcement ratio per ACI 318-99 Section 10.5

Sheet Inputs and Outputs

Inputs: wall dimensions, applied loads (axial, shear, and moment at base), soil bearing capacity, f'c and fy values, footing depth trial.

Outputs: required footing plan dimensions, bearing pressure distribution, reinforcement area (top and bottom mats), and all code checks flagged pass/fail.
